Dock Improvements at Hartlepool.
The North-Eastern Railway is it present (November 27) widen- ag and deepening the entra.co | leading from the old barbour at West Hartlepool to the north basin and thence to the central dock. The entrances are to be of an improved formation, and will no have a width of 70ft., as against 80ft, originally. The walls will have vertical, instead of curved, faces and will be con structed in concrete, faced with Cornish granite and, blue bricks. In the cofferdams abest piling in 50ft. and 80ft, lengths is being ased, The contract for the three pairs of gates required in coa nection with these, improvements was placed in December last with the Gutehoffnungshatte Coal,' Iron, Steel, and Engineering Company, of Oberhausen, Rhein- land, but has now been rescinded and the order given to Bir W. G." Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., of Newcastle. The hydraulio sluice and dook gate machinery. for these new entrances is to be supplied by the Hydraulic En gineering Company, of Chester, and will be constructed according to Norfolk's palents and be similiar to that provided by the same firm for the entrance and graving dook gates of the new joint dock at Hall. These im- provements at Hartlepool, are a continuation of the work carried ont by the railway company so ne time ago, when a new 65ft, ca trance from the company's docks was formed on the site of the old and disused entrance to its coal: dook".
