Joining a Liverpool firm he served an apprenticeship in ssil, and on obtaining his master's certificate joined the Blas Funnel Line, firet eerving some, few years in Mr. | Alfred Holt's mosquito float sail.. ing out of Singapore. He then joined the home service, and bas commanded several of the firm's fine steamers with thoroughness and succosa. He was held in bigh esteem by owners and all. connected with the line and associated with the trade. Mr. Werner Laurie gave a lunch at the Waldorf Hotel on Nov. 19, in honour of Mrs. Mary Gaunt, and her travels in Quina. She finished her book describing them some little time ago, and it will: be issued Boon by Mr. Laurie. Mrs. Gaunt says that she has not attempted to sum up China. She just tells in her own way what she saw.
