The Accident to the Hollow,
Further details of the accident to the steamer Holbow, which, esye Shipping and Engineering, was towed into Dalny with her propeller fouled show that the vessel encountered exceptionally savere weather in the Gulf of Peohili and was only saved from extensive damage by the ins
nmanship of her captain and oficers. The ship encountered a fierce gale from the north when of Nerth Point, with a terrific sea during which the two accom modation ladders and a coil of wire were washed overboard 'from the top of the after house. The wire fouled the propeller and wLD the boss, rapidly wound on bringing the engines to a stop. The cables were unbent and the chain paid out to 90 fathoms on both sides, as it was deemed imprudent to drop the heavy stock snobora in anob 8 688," but these failed to hold her and she fell broadside on to the sea, being swept by huge waves which broke the derrick adrift and awept the raila. The two anchore also got adrift and threatened to osrry away the bulwarke until they were secured by the officers and crew. All the heavy oil in the ship was paid out over the bows but the gale continued until eight on the Dec. following morning, when the Jan. wind shifted to S.W, and the

Tonnage at Tientsin. The total number and tonnage of steamers entered at Tientsin during the quarter April to June, 1914, was 340 chips of 440,787, tons, an increase of nine ships and 51,735 tons over the game quarter of 1913. Of the total entered Great Britain and Japan bad an equal proportion, 33.4 per cent. each. The next largest was China" with 15.2 per cent., Germany with 12.3 per cent, and
France with 3.1 per cent. Norway was represented by only 1.5 per cent.

The loss to German trade the fall of Tsingtan and the stop- page of all her steamers on the coast of China is demonstrated by the Customs statistios of ship- ping entered at that port during the last complete quarter before the war when, out of a total entered during the quarter April to June, 1914, of 252 vessels of 452,827 tone, Germany owned 87 ships of 193,139 tone, or 42.7 per cent. of the whole. The total entered during the quarter was 25 ships and 122,494 tone, or roughly 25 per cent. in excess thennage entered

C.P.R. Movements. Captain E. Beetham, R. N. R. O. P. R. transpacific service, with marine superintendent of the
hoadquarters at Vancouver, re cently left for Montreal, and it is presumed that his mission has Some connection with the report that the U.P. B. are contemplating taking over a large steamship to maintain some semblance of service on the Pacifio. In the event of the Minnesota being taken over by the O. P. R. it is more than probable that she will be operated, temporarily at any rate, under American registry. This would preolude any possibility of hor being chartered by the Admiralty.
