Production of Gold la" Japan.

The temporary suspension of exports of copper, remarks the Mainichi, involves a question even more important than that of the closing of the Copper mines and -refineries pending a recovery io demand, fer.t meana a stoppage of Japan's gold prodaotion aAB well. Most of Japan'a gold is contained in the copper ore, the Hidachi copper mine, owned by Mr. Kubara, yielding the largest the Ashio and Kosaka 'percentage, copper mines coming next. The Sado gold mine produces much less gold than the Hidachi copper mine. The question Brises, therefore, whether, with such a demand for gold as always existe in Japan, the country esu afford | to have the copper mines closed because copper does not happen to be paying. Hence the theory tl at the Gov. ernment should come to the resoue. The Government, how- aver, does not appear to look at the matter in the same light. If the copper and gold together cannot pay the cost of production, they evidently cannot do so apart, en the Government would be only throwing good money after bad if it kept the mines at work with a subsidy for the sake of the gold.
