Nov. 16, 4.5 a.m. The Admiralty reports that Indian troops, aided by the warship Duke of Edinburgh, carried oat sugosful operations against the Turkish garrison at Sheikh Syd, and occupied forte to the east of Cape Bab-el-Mandëh.
After the warship had disabled Fort Turbs, three battalions landed, and, in the face of opposition, carried the enemy's positions and occupied the forte.
Large amounts of munitions and six field gane were captured. The troops lost four killed and sixteen wounded; [Bab-el-Mandeh ("The Gate of Tears" is the name of the strait between Arabia and the Continent of Africa, by which the Red Sen is connected with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The Arabian peninsula here throws out a capa bearing the same name as the strait. Within the strait lies the risky island of Perima, since 1857 occupied by the British as a fort.]
