Mosera, Guthrie and Co., aided by the influence of the Straite Government, whose assistance bad also been request. ed, were able to orringe with the Straits Steamship Company to take up the businzas. The Straits Steamship Company have now arranged to run regularly be tween Singapore and Borneo ports, and vice versa, and the Government has promised them all possible support, and the company have informed Mesere. Guthrie and Co, that they
arrange a regal ir weekly service with scheduled dates of arrival and departu I am therefore directed by Ilia Excellency the Governor to re---- quest you to pass this information to all the members of your Cham ber, and His Excellency trusts that they will give their support to the Straits Steamship Company. The company have now reduced their rates of freight, etc. to the level of these formerly charged by the Norddeutoober Lloyd Company, but Government hope that later it will be possible tɔ arrange for a farther reduction; this at the moment is hardly pos- sible, in view of the fact that at present, and for so
some time to come, there will be little return freight to Singapore, and added. to this, the taking of deok pas Bengers to Bingapore is prohibit- ed."
