of the most common terminationa: of a vessel's career is by breaking up, dismantling, eto. (not in Consequence of casualty). The amount of tonnage an dealt with in 1913 wae 108,795 tons, this being 48,848 tons less than that Fr 1912. Nearly 20 1/2 per cent. of the steamers and 16 per osat, of the sailing vessels removed from the merobant fleet of the" world in the course of 1913 are accounted for in this manner. Of the total tonnage of such cages 42 3/4 per cent. is represented by United Kingdom vessels, as com pared with over 38 per cent, in 1912.
The statistical tables exhibit interesting data as to the relative frequency of the different kîn Is of casualty, etc., which cobola tod the existence of vessels. Stran 1 ingaand kindred onanalties wh: sh are comprised under the term “wrecked," are much the most prolific cause of disaster. To Buch casualties ara, attributable over 58 1/2 per cent. of the losses of steamers, and over 54 por cont, of sailing vessels. Cases of abandoned, foundered, and miss- ing vessels are no doubi Ire- quently more or less similar in the circumstancea of loss; If these be taken collectively, they form about 21 3/4 per cent. of the

The installation of the Johnson. line of Deisel motor ships on the run between Europe and San Francisco will result, says the San Francisco Examiner, in a revolution of the shipbuilding in- dustry and the establishment of this port as the world's great shipping centre, according to Cap ain Emil. Lowenhagen and bis officers of the motor ship. Kronprinz Gustaf Adolf. The Kronprinz Gustaf Adolf, now in port, is the first of the Johnson fleet to be sent to the Pacific, and,, accord- ing to Grace and Company, gener- al agents for the line here, hasTM demonstrated that the considerable economy effected by the new method of propulsion will ultimate- ly mean that the old type of steamers will be supplanted. In addition to saving nearly one half. in the cost of operation, the Swe- dish ship has demonstrated that if necessary the Diceal vessel may with profit be employed in the transportation of freight at a rate which would mean a loss to owners utilizing the ordinary, team engine. The Johnson motor ships and others now, being built have sufficient fool- carrying capacity to carry them completely around the world. The Kronprinz can leave this

retora trip before the tanks need replenishing. In the opinion of hipping men here, this means that rather than purchase the fuel in Europe or at other highpriced... centres, the majority of the motor. ships will be directed to come here for their fuel. The effect for freight will be out and the will be, it is said, that the rates
raw products of the world will be carried here at mere ballast charges. It would require 35 tons of $5 coal to produce the necessary power with steam engines to carry a ship the size of the Kronprinz a daily distance of 250 miles, Seven tone of oil at one-fifth the price of the coal carries the Swedish motor ship the same distance,
