The British steamer Eburna, 2,057 tons net register, owned by the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Com pany, arrived at Karatsu recantly from New Orleans, via the Parama Canal, The Nagaaltš Press says that this vessel was the first British steamer to pasa the Canal westward bound. The passage took nine hours. In the first section there are three looks, in the scound two, and in the third one. The Ebarns was bound for Taku.
The steamers are all itted throughout with electric light and have accommodation for a limited number of saloon-passengers. All steamers carry a duly qualified surgeon. Cargo taken at through rates to all ports in Netherlands-India and Australia."

The Burma Chamber of Com- merce Committee has considered a letter from the Joint Secretary. to the Government of Burma, Public Works Department, for warding a reasoned note on the Twante Canal Scheme by the Inspector-General of Irrigation, India, who holds that Mr. Moik Nov.ie mistaken in the premises and Dec conclusions regarding the Twazte Canol; that sluice gatos are not necessary, and that, if the now out be restricted to a bed width of 180 feet there is little or no. reason to fear the silting up of the Konoungto Creek; and stating that the Government of India, agreeing with the conclu sions of the Inspector-General do not consider that sluice gates are necessary for the purpose of re- gulating the flow as between the Kanouagto Creek and the new chord.

The directors of Sir W, G, Armstrong, Whitworth & Co have declared interim dividen s for the half year of 10 per cent, per annum on the ordinary. shares, 4 per cent. per annum on fitat preference shares, and 5 per cent. per annum on second pre- ference shares all less income tax-payable after September 30. The ordinary dividend a year ago was at the same rate, free of tax. In April of that year a bonus of 25 per cent, in shares, paid for by capitalising reserve, had been given.
