been suggested that the Grand Canal, which has been allowed to eilt since tribute rice was carried by ees to Tientsin and thence to Peking, should be rendered navigable by dredging, but if this were done the operation would probably have to be renew- ed in the following year as the oding of the Yi River would bring about conditions similar to hose which exist at present. The Canton Press and the War
From the Canton papers to hand we learn that one of the parera printed in that city wan recently temporarily suppressed on account of the sbaurd stories it had been printing regarding affairs at Teingten. The stories appear to have been of a harrow- ing nature, one of them being that the Japanese had killed one thousand, five hundred Chinoso
ionoceat Shangtung farmers and tradespeople. The Japanese, it was also alated, had been com- pelling the Chinese to hand over their mules with only indefinite promises of payment. Of course, such stories ware manifestly. absurd and the Japanese Consul at Canton promptly called the at- tention of the authorities to them, It would be interesting to know Telephone No. 1683. the source of such ridiculous

with the offending paper in the manner they did, particularly after the warnings they had previously issued, it won'd be more satisfactory if they made a thorough inquiry into the source of the false reports that have been, of late, so sedulously circulated among the ChinesØ. ̧ ̧‚-
