Dundonald's. Terror.
The war recalls the terrible invention known as "Dundonald's Terror "-the dread recrot which lies at the War Office.
The plan
wae invented by Lord Dundonald over a century ago and submitted to the B itish Goverüment, which on threo separate cocasions ** fased to accede titonthegrounds of its inhumanity and the utter annihilation which it wou'd cause The invention was'ga auteed to annihilate fortressce, armice, and fleets by one conclusive blow. The several committees which reported on the horrible" thing were satisfied that it possessed all the dread powers claimed for it. Lord Dundonald, in 1812 ffered to wipe out Toulon, take Flushing at one blow, and sweep the seas of the French. During the Crimean War he fared to redace Cronstadt and Sevastopol, and annibil t the itaasians. The Government refused on the grounds of the inbaman butchery
it would cause. The alightesi' hint of the invention has never leaked out. England may úse it some day when in her lust extremity,
