a very creditable performance. The type is very similar to the 50ft, steam pinnaces at present carried on battleships, and is indeed destined to replace them. The only important difference be tween the motor and steam boate is in respect of the machinery.. Forward is a forecastle for the crew, upon which is a position forecastle a cabin is arranged for for mounting a gun. Abaft the officers use baving a teak roof and opening into a cock-pitat the stern. Both these spaces are ̈ rather larger than in the steam boats, owing to the smaller space required for the machinery. Fael tanks are arranged at the forwardi end of motor space and feed the engine by gravity. On the official trials a speed of well over 11 knots was maintained for a period a two hours, without in any way urcing the engine. The ma- chinery consists of one Thurny- croft S-8 type direct reversible paraffin engine starting on blow lamp. The cylinders are six in

150 bhp. at about 550 p.m. stroke, and the engine developa Reversing is effected by moving. the foam shaft longitudinally, thas bringing another set of oams into operation, the initiat impulse being given to the orgino· by comp ea-ed air, at 575lb., in- troduced through ¡Valves on the cylinder head. The air is stored in three steel reeer- voirs in the engine-room. There ia a compressor driven by cam shaft at fore end of the engine, and also an auxiliary hand driveni compressor for the first charge in the reservoira. As is well known; quick manma-ring, starting, and stopping is an essential feature in these 50!t motor pinnases, and no greater proof of thy efficiency of the reversing arrangements can be given than that the engine passed the severe teats in rever- sing called for by the Admiralty without say hitches. A Thorny croft 3-4-i.,, an engine of the.. samo type; tat with tour aylin ders instead of six, has just been installed in a 45ft, pinnace build ng for the Admiralty by Mesara! Thornycroft.
