The Zuyder Zee. It is believed that Quern Wilhelmina has resolved to carry out, if possible during her own ego, the great work of reclaim- ng the Zuyder Z-e which has con in contemplation now far Cores of years. This huge slice of land was BLooped out by the North Sea in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the southern half having been finally absorbed in the year 1410. Many reclama- tion schemes have been projected, but the ons finally accepted is the work of Mr. O. Lely, a Daich Engineer, which aims at reclaim. ing only so much of the area DE will yield fertile farm, lania, leaving the rest, that is the deeper, channels which are heavily blanketed with sand, to provide battar waterways. Early estim- aten gave the cost of the work sá £15 millions and the period (as one-third of a century. But since then the Panama Canal has been
built, and experience with the appliances used there has made it clear that outting and filling for reclamation could probably be done much quicker) and cheaper than the framera of the estimate thought possible. The dyke to shut out the North Sea will be 25 miles long carrying on its orost a first class.osrriage way and a double track railway. There will be looks for the ingress and egress of vessels, and the navigation channels within the area will be improved artificially. Four distinct holders, or tracts of land, have, beển marked out for reclamation, esch of which will be provided with its own dyke and then the basta a within the dyke drained by pumping. Each basin will be drained in sections by providing subsidiary dams within it, and sa each section is laid bare it wilk st once be got ready for cultivation and brought into use. The total - ares of reclaimed land will cover about 800 square miles and will soon repay the whole cost of the scheme.
