Lure of the Lighthouse. Every year the lighthouses all over the world are the cause of the destruction of thousands of | birds. In four nights during the migrating season 10,000 birds. were killed at the Barfleur Light, At one time it was genarully. believed that the birds, attracted 1st half Aug. by the glure of the lantern, flow 2nd half Aug. blindly towards it and striking 2nd half Aug. the glass or the metal frame were 2nd half Aug. killed. Bat close observation ...Ist half Sept. has shown that this is not the 1st half Sept.case. Most of the birda have st half Sept, flattered about the lantern until, finding no resting place, they have at luat died from exhaustion. Of course in rough weather many are dashed against the structure by the wind, but the great majority of deaths occur in the manner described. Some time ago the matter was taken up "in- Holland whera, at the Tarschal- ling Lighthouse great numbera of deaths occurred. A number: of perobes were placed about the lantern and it is now claimed
The steamers are all fitted throughout with Electrio Light, and have accommodation for a limited number of saloon passengers, and will take cargo to all Ports in Netherlands Iddle on through BL.
