London, Aug. 17, 1 a.m. The Austrian Ambassador has left London, and is returning to Austria from Falmouth by sen.
A Temporary Lull.
The latest telegram from Brussels to date says:-There has been no change in the general situation since Saturday evening. The Germans do not appear to be in great force before us. Our Army is not in direct contact with the enemy at any point, and generally there seems to be temporary lull. -
Germans Driven from Heights.
An official Paria despatch says the French forces drove a German Army Corps from the heights commanding Blamont and Oirey back on Saarburg, after a hot engagement.

OTHER INFORMATION.
We are informed from a reliable source that Field Marshal Sir John French, Inspector General of the Forces and Commander-in- Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, arrived in Paris on the 15th. inst., and was loudly, cheered by the populace. He had a long interview with President Poincare and the Minister of War.
A telegram received in the Colony, at 10 o'clock this morning states that the forts at Liege are still holding out.
We are requested by the Colonial decretary to state that a telegram has been received by the British Consul at Harbin from the British Ambassador at St. Petersburg stating that passengers travelling by the Siberian route may proceed by way of Finland, Stockholm and Borgen.

Aug. 16, 5.55 a.m. The French Government has issued a communius preparing the public for the impending great battle. It says that owing to the foots that several millions of men will be engaged and that the front will extend for 250 miles, no definite result can be expected for at least a week; and possibly more. The Government appeals to the public to follow the phases of the operations coolly and intelli- gently.
Freach Begla Offensive.
