An excellent example of the advantages of electrical driving in textile manufacture is afforded by the tweed mills of a big firm in Oxfordshire. At one time we 130-h.p. slow running beam engines were employed, each of which used some 26 tons of coal a werk. An improvement was effected by the substitution of! two Crossley gas engines, which reduced, the coal consumption from 7 lb. to 1.8 lb, per h. p. hour, I at the same time epabling the machinery to be speeded up 10 per cent. These engines drove the old shafting by means of ropes, and tests shewed that 18) per cent of the power of one of them was lost in, transmission. To avoid this waste of power the expedient of introducing a 120, k.vs. generator, with a number of motors, was tried, and wa scoomfal that gradually the whole of the mill was converted to electrical drive on the individēji dal system.
