What England has gained by the entente is doubtful. She has sacrificed Persia and Morocco; indirectly, it would now seem, she has sacrificed Manchuris. She has stimulated rather than prevented the construction of the German fleet, so that Germany as an opponent is far mère dan- gerous than before. And what would England have lost had ahe stood out or "chosen the, other aide ? Germany would have got its Bagdad sobome, but with a |friendly arrangement she could certainly have secured sufficient guarantees.
