"FRIVOLITY, FREEAR."
A Clever Show at the Theatre Royal,
When "Frivolity" Freear said that he had succeeded in making the Saltan laugh, the intimation was received without any very apecial thrill of excitement; for we haven't the pleasure of know- ing the Sultan. But when, with our own eyes, we saw him make Hongkong laugh-end that not grudgingly or of necessity, but. whole heartedly, rapturously and unbrokeply for two and a half hours-then we knew him to be a truly great man; for we ɖo know Hongkong,
Saturday night's programme was a fall one and, considering the incessant rain, there was decidedly a big house. Events began with impersonations of well known artiste, and additional intérest was lent to this item by the fact that Mr. Frooar did all his remarkable quick changes'

"ip full view of the audience. It is not 80 many years sinoo wo had the plossure of seeing both Pat Rafferty and Gus Elen perform, and we can therefore tostily to the fidelity of Mr. Fresar's imper- sonation of them.
"
As the "Poor Old Maid" he was an absolutely perfect access-80 perfect, in fact, that he succeeded in introducing almost a note of pathos into the picture of the old lady; at timos que forgot the huge conicality of the affair and felt quito eyinpathetic towards her. His "Bashfut dirl" and bis "Irish olivemaa were just as convincing and as mirth-provok- ing, while bis Hard Luck " struck us on a positive masterpiece of gorrality and funny verbosity.
'Some of his "Uomicalities" were not new to Hongkong, but even here he showed himself a great artist, farbe contrived quite easily to convey brilliant splashes of new humour into old gags, thus giving them the air of old favourites freshly painted and polished, and better than ever.
