The tragedy that has jaar bean commited indicates the depth of the feeling among, at least, a certain section of the Serbs towards the Austrians. Blind indeed must be those who imagine that any good can come to their causa by striking at individuals, for no thatter how prominently identified inay be those individuals, their vacant place can always be filled by others and others probably more implacable on account of the tragedy. In every respect such tragedies are useless, except, ne showing vividly a haired that is well known to exist. They are cowardly in the extreme, an they are generally the premeditated sotion of a wary number against unauspecting individual.

Such tragedios are all bat futile in their consequences, and if they: result in anything at all it is in more drastic measures being adopted towards the countrymen of those guilty of such anarchical actions.

New Canton Notes To-day,
Redemption of the depreciated Canton note currenty begins in earnest to-day. It is ostimated. roughly that the notos in face value amount to $32,000,000, against the recovery of which the Government proposes to pay $18,000,000 in new notes issued by the local branch of the Bank of Obina under foreign supervision. That is to say, the notes issued by the rebel Governors Wu Hon- man and Chan Kwing-ming are to be redeemed at fifty per cent, of their face value. The loss to the people is, of course, a heavy one, but as the loss was incurred long ago and the bulk of the depreciated notes are now in the bands of comparatively few speculators no particular if kick... is being made in fact the great majority are rather glad that the change is to be
