it is of interest to note that a movement is on foot in the Chinese Government to frame similar legislation. In this Colony an Ordinance for the preservation of wild birde and game has been in existence since 1885, and the present Bill but makes the meas- are more comprehensive and stringent.There is; perhaps, not the same urgent need for such a measure in the Colony of Hong. kong as exista in China at the present time. We have not so many wild birds and game in. Hongkong and the New Territory: as to make the killing of them a profitable commercial enterprise of any magnitude, and we are-- not aware that birds are ahot within the territories of the
Colony, as is the case in many parts of China, to be exported to foreign markete for the sake of their plumage.

The International Congress of Tropical Agriculture, which opened at the Imperial Institute yesterday and will terminate ite labours on June 30, has for ite [object the discussion of the wage and means of improving agri- culture in the Tropics and thereby increasing the production of the numerous foodstuffe and industri- al raw materials which have their origin in tropical countries.. These matters are of vital interest: to the trade and industries of the United Kingdom, but they are alen of supreme importance to British Colonies and dependenc- ies. Questions of labour organi sation and supply, and scientific problems concerning rubber pro daction, can only be satisfactorily, solved by discussion, in congress, where the partial results attained by ons method can be fully com pared with those obtained by others and, by uniting the merits. of all, a satisfactory rule can be. laid down for general use.
