THE SANITARY
DEPARTMENT,
Interesting Features of Last
Year's Work.
The report of the Head of the Sanitary Department (Ir. D. W. Tratman) for last year states that the Department on January 1 took over from the contractors the whole of scavenging the City of, Viotoria. All the best men in the contractor's gangs including Foremon wore taken on the Staff. After a few weeks' trial it was foond necessary to rease tho number of scavenging coolies by 10. Of these were needed for Districts which had grown largely since the soleme was drafted, and the remainder for tho! removal of manure from the cattle wharved. The cost of the latter is more than covered by the pay- ments made by importen of cattle for this service.
