Success the wishes of Her Majesty's Government no less than of unsparing suppressing gout, and in doing so by a system which excludes the Police from all temptation, and gives hope that the days of former Corruption of the Force are passed, never to return.

Law in fact almost inclined to infer from the success within attending the Experiment of separating the Police from all action taken to suppress gaming that the latter formerly thrived principally from the direct Countenance and support which it derived from the Police employed to suppress it, and secondly from the facility with which the Chinese could purchase an apparent visible protection when violating the law. This it was which most encouraged them to make the attempt; and in this way both the Police and the Chinese had mutual inducements which on each side tended rather to the extension than the suppression of gambling.
