It was pointed out that the stresses which come on a ship owing to the inequality of weight and support appear to be greate when the wave is about the length of the ship. The differences be- tween the stresses in this condition and these in smooth water vary a great deal in different ships according to the loading. In
a sea the conditionere differ. ent. In ocean-going steamers, on account of the load which actually exists in them, the stress when the ship is on the crest of a waye in very much higher than when she is in the hollow. For instance in the case of a ship 630ft, long the maximam stress on the crest of the wave may be as high as 1!! tons, while in the hollow of the wave it may be as low as eight tone per square inch of the met- erial. The corresponding stress it still water in such ships would not to more than two or three tone.

ship of the dimensions of the Imperator this would mean B wave, gay, 900ft. long and 45ft. high. A 5001t. ship wave would be 25ft, high. It is obvious that the 800ft. Imperator and a 500ft. ship breasting the same ocean would meet the same seas. A wave 500ft. long and 25ft. high would pat a severe strass on the 500ft. ship but would put practically no stress on the Imperator, A wave 000ft, long and 45ft, high would put little stress on the 500ft. ship and great stress on the Imperator. Observation shows that the size of waves depends upon the dis- tance over the esa that the wind has been blowing,

Mr. A. A. Booth, presiding at the annual meeting of the Canard Steamship Co., at Liverpool, in moving the adoption of the report and accounts and the declaration of a dividend of 10 per cent, on the Ordinary shares of the com pany, referred to the direct sail- inge of the company from Liver- pool to New York.
Their action in this matter, he said, bad been governed entirely by business considerations and the avoidance of any unnecessary risk to life. They all regretted that their actin should have even the appearance of being ua». friendly to the interests of Queens- 109止, They still maintained their old and highly valued con neotion with the Irish Transit- lantic passenger businees by mesne of the Boston and Canadian services.
The results of the year'a work ing approximited very closely to thoas of 1912. The gross receipts. showed ́an increase of over £750,000, of which no less than 20h May, 10 a.m. improved freight earnings east- £83,000 was accounted for bý
