Rawlinson's entirely a reverting to Mr Rawlinson's original suggestion that the byewash or bye-channel should be a tunnel or drift way in the solid ground on one side? As Colonel de Butts remarks (C.O.4.71 - 14th February, 1870), the deep cutting planned by Mr Wilson for a permanent byewash led through the embankment instead of being kept clear of it as insisted on by Mr Rawlinson. Mr McCallum has simply therefore reverted to Mr Rawlinson's plan instead of going on with Mr Wilson's - and aided by Mr Kydd sent out expressly to superintend the work.
Mr Rawlinson's plan and Mr Kydd's skill and care has been a success in which Mr Macpherson had apparently very little share.

According to Mr Kydd whom I have seen this day, he was the party who suggested the change of Mr Wilson's plan and reversion to that of Mr Rawlinson and he had also originally the principal share
