THE CHILDAR PIRACY.

Chinese Authorities make Elghty Arrests.

We learn that the Chineza authorities have been fortunate enough to secure no fewer than eighty arrests of persons believed to h've been concerned in the Ohildar pirvoy.

Most of then were located in a village in Obinoze territory and when the authorities made a raid some inaltempting to escape were shot. The rest were appre- bended and taken to Canton, where they will be tried. Some of the property said to be found by the authorities includes clocks, stolen from the Childar.

If this information is correct it wou'd appear that something like ninety of the pirates have been Bocounted for, leaving quite a small number still at liberty. It is clear that the number actually engaged. in the piracy must have been somewhere near 110 as on the return of the Childar to this port, after the outrage, the number of passengere on board was only 115 ont of 222 that left.

Master and Charterar of the Vessel Figed.

The Marine Magistrate, Com- mander Basil Taylor, delivered his reserved decision in the case in which Barold Nielssen, master of the B.. Childar was chargeil yesterday with having sailed from Hongkong on March 15, with more passengers on board hi ship than allowed on bis clearance certificate. The Coinc-Siam Stum Navigation Co. Ltd., of which. Mr. Yung Shing How is the man- ager, was charged with unlaw- fully and knowingly consenting

to the same.

'In the absense of Mr. Lewis, of Messrs Johnson Stokes and Master, who appeared for the defence yesterday, Mr. S. S. Moore was before the court.

His Worship said:-In this case the evidence clearly proves that both the defendants were guilty of the offence charged against them, but in different degrees.. I consider that the charterer is primarily to blame. for the breach of the law on the part of the ship, insomuch that he instruoted the master to clear | with only fifty passengers and then proceeded to sell 233 paes- age tickets for the voyage, with out informing the captain that he had done so.

The master is also to blame

in a lesser degree, insomuch that

he took no steps to discover how many passengers he had on board before sailing, nor to cause the increase in numbers to be report ed at the re-opening of the Harbour Office on, the Monday morning. I do not consider either of the defendants wilfully offended.

Both the defendants ere convicted.

I sentence the first defendant, Mr. Harold Nielasen, to a fine of $10 and the second defendant Mr. Yung Shing-kew to a fine of $200.

"Shanghai, Recived April 16. The Chinese authorities have secured a haul of in- stigators of the rebellion who had arrived from Japan.

The party arrived in Shanghai and began the work of seduction of the troops, offering large rewards for the assas sination of officials.

A policeman, on pretenes of being a fellow-conspirator, discovered the plans, and five rebels were seized, together with documents which are alleged to be signed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

There is no doubt that the situation is threatening, and officials are displaying most feverishTM anxiety here as well as at Nanking and Wuchsog.
