Some of the experiments bitherto have been carried out without a aoul on board the Radio. Mr. Hammond lets her inn ahead, · and follows in a launch, to be present in ongo of an emergency. magnificent painted beams and a iled roof of many coloura. The desperate discomfort of these' places as living houses judged by our standarde jumpe to the eyes.

A Chinese house has no windows, only trellia work pasted over with paper. The Chinese eat, sleep, and conduct, the busi- ness of life wherever the fancy takes them.

They have no special rooms.. set apart for special purposes. They eat on their beds and sleep on the floor. For heating pur poses they have evolved what is known as the glove, bed, coniet- ing of a raised platform at the end of the room which is heated with hot air in winter time, the only warm spot in the house, for there are no fireplaces. They have no bede, only tedding, and the Emperor would sleep hud- dled up in a quilt on the stove in the same way as his humbleat subject.
