ADMIRALTY WAKING UP.
We have more than once comasated, in these columne, on the need for the Admiralty waking up and securing an adequ⚫te fleet of aircraft which shall be sufficient for the "needs of Britain. It is pleasing, therefore, to read, in the latest mails from. Home, s speech on the subject recently made by Mr. Churchill in the House of Commons: Apart from its value in itself, it forms a refreshing break in the clamour on the Home Rule question.Mr. Churchill was able to make it clear that at last the work of providing such a fleet as is required is going forward steadily and satisfactorily. it was proposed, he said, to build eight airships and two sheds for them near Chatham and in Norfolk. The Admiralty, he admitted, could not pretend that this programme competed offectively with France or Germany, but, having regard to Britain's superiority in seaplanes, they deemed it sufficient. -
It is to be hoped that Mr. Churchill is right in relying so much on Britain's superiority in the matter of seaplanes. Doubt is raised by the fact that Colonel Seely's figures regarding aeroplanes were proved none too accurate when they were carefully examined, Ministers have a way of being anduly optimistic at times. Nothing was said in the speech regarding airships in which, it would appear, British authorities are again taking considerable interest. After one failure, airship construction was dropped. Now Britain is making up lost ground and is credited with having the fastest airship in the world. The art of flging is one in which Britana should surely show superiority. It calls for those qualities which have always been regarded as essentially British. Science, skill, enterprise, daring and endurance are essential in flying; and these form a splendid test for any nation. It is a test ont of which Britain ought to amerge with credit,
One excellent point made by the First Lord was that the public could best advance the interests of flying in Britain by the provis ion of landing-places throughout the country, at all events along curtain well-marked routes. That seems a most excellent idea. It
