It is comparatively easy for the few large compradores of Hong- kong to organize se they do and virtually dictate terms to their customers. Such combinations? are aided by a multitude of cir. cumstances which compel the producer not to attempt direct sale to the customer. Organized ohannels of supply are therefore established and deviation from these by independent short ente is practically impossible. Hongkong has unconscionaly but surely allowed itself to drift into the hands of the supplying organiza tions-the Guild of this and the Guild of that--and these, dictato their own terms. Remedies are of more importance than investig ations of and spéculations regard ing causes. The only remedies we can think of and they may be rather far-fetched in a small and non-profusing colony like Hngkong-is the abolition of monopolies and the fixing of rentals on the basis of a Govern- ment valuation of properties. If this were done, the path opened for healthy competition and restric tions placil upon landlords, we would Lear less of the wail, which is on everybody's lips, that Hongkong in becoming an impossible place to live in,
