HONGKONG, TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 1914.
AN EDUCATIONAL QUESTION,
Some little time ago, in thess columns, we discussed the teaching of history to young Chinese. It may be well, perhaps, also to consider for a moment the allied science of geography. The two essentially hang together, though it is only within comparative ly recent times that the fact has come to be recognised. Formerly they were taught separately and in the most unfortunate way in the world. The method adopted was to make a child extract from a page, or a chapter of a text-bok, ne many facts as possible and
then to test his memory: Evan within the recollection of men not yet grown old this method was generally followed. But it had the great drawback, that it did not stimulate the child's imagination. Very few children can decide as to the relative value of facts. To most children, indeed, one fact is of equal value with another.
