JARDINE, MATHESON

This was an extraordinary case,TH HE Forty fifth Ordinary, because the man who sold the cigarette caso went with the police officer bo'ding the wa-rant, and by chance saw Mr. Atkinson, and identified him. At. the police station, another "omployee of the atores attended and also identified Mr. Alkineou out of "Boveral persons, who were put up. Bat there was not the slightest suggestion now that Mr. Alkinson was the man wanted: It was beyond question that Mr. Aikin- son was not in London at the time. For the mistake an an- reserved, sincere, and profound apology was offered..

Mr. Conway, on behalf of Mr. Atkinson, said the apology

WOR

accepted in the same 'spirit in *which it was made. Witnesses were in Court to testify to the lieutenant's movements if necessary.

Mr. Francia did not think it Was necessary to hear anything further. It wns can of those unfortunate mistakes which had „occurred, and would happen again. With the greatest pleasure he discharged Mr. Atkinson, who left the Court without the slight est stain on his character. Noth ing had been heard or said in Bay way to interfore with his honourable career.
