RACES ON THE FILM.

Hongkong's Great Sporting

Event Screened,

Special pictures of the Hong- kong Races were screened at the premis' s of the Variety Film Exchange Company, Kowloon, yesterday fternoon, for aGovern- mont House party. Lady May, the Misses May, Captain Connolly, Mr. T. F. Hough, and other ladies and gentlemen were present, The term "much enjoyed " is rather an abused one, but it can pro- perly be employed regarding yes terday's exhibition. Other films were creditably shown but that of the Races claimed obiel attention.. There is not a retail left unsnap-| ped, from the crowda going to the course, the arrival of His Excellency the Governor and Lady May and party, scenes in the paddock, "the booths, stands, parade of the ponigs, the races, presentation of the Ladies' Purse, the promenade to tiffin and the weighing room Hundreds of residents are recognisable, and the pictures of Major General Kelly, Mésars, Hough, Gedge and Hodgson are remarkably good. The genial clerk of the course is caught in characteristic mood, When this picture is publicly shown at the Wig-wam Tennis Court, Kowloon, it should surely | be a huge success.

His Excellency was unavoidab ly absent yesterday and his regret was conveyed to the representatives of the Variety Film Exchange Company:

We have been informed that the film the Races taken by the Variety Film Exchange, is to be shown at Government House to morrow, by request of flie Excellency.

BOXING.

A Fitting Conclusion to a

Sporting Month..

This has been a sporting month, and no more fitting wind. up coald be wished fr than a aporting night on the last day of the month, Mr. F.. E. Hall hub arranged a boxing programme to bo presented at the City Hall on Saturday evening, and the most noticable feature of that bill,, to our way of thinking, is the Smith-Perkins contest. If "Polly" is anything like the man be was when he stripped for his bout with Bux, thea Smith is in for. one of the toughest contests he has ever been engaged in. Of Course with his talent, there is no earthly reason why Smith. should funk the affair; he is, i anything, quicker than Perkins, and if report be true ho has mach the better of the age bandicap. Perkins is of a tough class and will fight while there is breath in bie body that is on his showing with Bax-and can pay out in the last round of a big fight almost as forcefully ns in the earlier stages. The amateur con- testibetween Mr. J: R. Forbes and Seaman Simmonds, H.M.S. Merlin, will be interesting as will the bout between Sky Kerrison

Peking, Received Feb. 20.

The Waichispaopu has presented identios? notes to the diplomatic representatives in connection with the re- cent trouble in the foreign settlement of Amoy, in which a mob attacked a body of armed Sikhs who were 'carrying out the Council's instructions to remove the stalls from the streets to enable the cleansing of the drains to be carried out. The Sikhs fired, wounding four Chinese, and four Sikha were injured. Nino Chinese were arrested.

The Mixed Court Magistrate endeavoured to obtain the releass of those who were arrested. The Consular authorities replied stating that they did not approve of the behaviour of the Magistrate, who dismissed the Coo- sular officials and sent officials to take over the charge of the Mixed Court.

The Waichiaopu states that the Government cannot recognise the Magistrate's dismissal and requests that the Mixed Court be returned to the Chinese authorities, the arrested men handed over to its jurisdiction, and the Sikhe punished,
