It may be noted, also that the' general trend of the changes in pronunciation is towards easa snd fluency, Ceaseless proqrecious experimenta are being made in the direction of least reistance, The majority fail: a few succeed, and it is the few that encoood which gradually bring about those changes in pronunciation which are now recognised as the basis of all etymology, Dr. Brydges' protest will no doubt prove a check on some changes which are now taking place. He may induce a few people to retain the t in," nature," "fasture," etc., in their more guarded moments, and to make a distinction between "duel" and "jewel" in public speaking.
But if the popular prononciation of these words is one of the few experiments that succeed, then it is to be feared. that in familiar convertation the
