Canton's Currency, The latest scheme which bas received the 'endorsement of the Governor-General is indicative of the extreme gravity of the crisis. It is proposed to dispose of the Government's holdings of land and shares in order to provide the necessary guarantee for the notes that are in circulation. The sacrifice is a tremendous one, probably unprecedented in the history of the province. The properties enumerated in the official list are valued at fourteen million dollars and some of them are no donbt a fruitful source of revenue. Unfortunately, no figures are available as to the ac- taal amount of depreciated car- rency circulation, bat fairly reli. able estimates pat the total at between thirty and forty million dollare. It is doubtful whether, under the depressed conditions which prevail, the properties to be disposed of will realise in the open market.as much as fourteen mil- lion dollars, but there can be no doubt that they should reslie a sum sufficient to prevent any farther depreciation in the valwe of the notes and at the same time give an impetus to the scheme for the organization of a bank for the restoration of the provincial QU'ICE:CY.
