The centre-board has never found much favour amongst yachtamen in this country, ex- cepting for smallcraft. The pre- judice with which was regarded by some men was doubt less a survival of old ideas, when a yacht was looked upon as a doating home, and every atten- tion was given to comfort below docks. The box in which the centre-board is encased, in having necessarily to come above the Tossel's waterline, curtails inter- nal accommodation by outting a considerable portion of the cabins in two. So long as these views obtained the contre-board wae regarded ne o mere expedient for gaining certain points in sailing at the sacrifice of comfort aboard, and therefore to be discouraged. Among American yachtsmen there were no such prejudicos, and for some years the typical sloop, corresponding to our cutter, was a vessel of shallow draught, relying upon her great beam for stability and a centre-board for preventing leeway when on a wind.
A Bone of Contention. The use of the centre-board was a bone of contention between chellangere and defeuders for the America Cup for many years, English yachtsmen contending that centre-board yachts should not be permitted to compete for the trophy. Until quite recently a yacht fitted with the appliance was often referred to as a more eailing machine. On the other hand, American yachtsmen olung to it tenaciously, and when the America Cup "deed of gift" was redrafted in the year 1887 a clause was inserted specially pro: viding that centre-board vessels should always be eligible as com- petitors. Another famous vessel built straits and India via with a centre-board was Queen Mab, a Watson design, which Straits, Ceylon, India via Bombay-Par formed one of the fine class of forty-raters in 1892. She used it in a few of her earlier, races, and then it was wedged up: although there was some disgreement on the point between the designer and the skipper, Mr Watson con- tending that it would have been beneficial. Still, Ben, Parker, the skipper, had his way for the greater part of the season, and made a fine record in a hot olas, Ningpe, making but, little use of the sliding-keel.
When two boats of the calibre of Iverna and Queen Mab tried the innovation and discarded it, and then, without them, piled up long strings of prize flags, it was, perhaps, not encouraging to designers to continue producing vessels of this type, and doubt- less the objection to them still re- mained with majority of owners hence, we have seen our yachts develop through various rating rules on the fixed-keel model.
The adherence to the Gred keel has always had the effect of producing vessels draught. The draught has naturally varied under different rules. Until the days of Vigilant the American boats competing
