It appears from the detailed figures given that of merchant vessels being built in this candtry two of 14,000 gross tonnage are intended for Japan and one of 500 tone for Shim. The table of shipbuilding outside the United Kingdom shows that 11 steam vessels of 14,255 gross tonnage are under construction at Hong- kong and nine of 8,288 tons at Shanghai, whilst for Japan the figures are:-Kobe and Osaki, 12 atram vessels of 23,707 gross and Nagasaki, two of 24,000 tons; making a total of 14 v vsels of 47,797 gross tonnage,
