THE HONGKONG- TELEGRAP, MONDAY, FEBRUARY
SPECIAL CABLES.
HONGKONG'S ATTORNEY GENERAL.
TO ACT AS CHIEF JUSTICE OF STRAITS SETTLEMENT,
(From Our Own Correspondent,)
Singapore, Received Feb. 2.
It is officially sanoanced that. the Hon. Mr. J. A. 8. Bucknili,K.C., Attorney General of Hongkong, is to not as Chief Justice of the Straits Settlemente for a period of seven months from April 1, during the absence of Sir W. H, Hyndman Jones.
[From enquiries we learn that the appointment fore- shadowed above has been practically decided för somo. time past, and that Mr. Bucknil leaves Hongkong on March 28 by the English mail. The course of procedure," that of appointing an oficial from one Colony to act in another, is exceptional, and in view of the fact that Sir Byndmaa Jones is 67 years of age; there is a strong possibility that Mr. Bucknill's transfer to the Straite will be more than a temporary one. For the moment, however. the appointment is only an acting one, for the period men- tioned in the telegram, and at present no announcement can be made as to who will likely not for Mr. Bucknill here. Sir Hyndman Jones has been in the Colonial service since 1480 and has been Chief Justice of the Straits Settlementa since August, 1906.
Mr. John Alexander Strachey Bucknil, who was ap pointed Attorney-General for this Colony on May 11, 1912, is a Fellow of the Zoologieal Soolety. He was educated primarily at the Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrez, where in 1891 he secured an exhibition in science. Leaving the Charterhouse School he went to, Keble College, Oxford, and in 194 he took his B. A degree, securing honours in ohemistry. Two years later he became a barrister-at-law of the Inner Temple ndjined the midland circuit in 1896. Agar later he took the master of arts degree, Oxford, and in 1972 want to the Transvaal were, he practised as an advcate of the Supreme Court, The same year ha became a justice of the peace, and two years later was appointed a member of the Legislative Council, Among other offices, which he held was that of member of the prisons advisory board. 1905, legal advisor to the attorney-general 906. and chairman of committees of the Jegislative council in the same year. From 1902 to 1907 he was alas commissioner for patents and registrar for trade marke and companies for the Transvaal,
In addition to these duties he was chairman to many government commi sions and on several occasions has been the recipient of social thank- from the Transvaal adminis- tration. A work which he performed, in a most praise- worthy manner was the condust of the commission, he boing sole commissioner, to enquire into the allegations of immor- ality made against the Chinese labourers, while he also made a searching enquiry as to the reasons for the non-publication of detailed mining statistics by the department of mines in the Transvaal..
In 1907 he left the Transvaal on appointment as King's
· advocat · in Cyprus, & position which he held until he came hore. He has acted as a member of the legislative and exemtiva councils during the same time.
His hobby is ornithology and he has published an in- teresting working in this connection entitled, The Birdy of Surrey."]
