I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 17th instant, in which calling my attention in the first instance to three extracts accompanying your letter, from the Report of the Committee appointed to investigate certain supposed irregularities in the Survey Department - you inform me that His Excellency the Governor charges me with wilful and habitual disobedience of orders, with the unauthorized expenditure of Public Money, and with gross mismanagement of the business of my Department - especially in the payment of Chinese Contractors.

You further inform me by direction of His Excellency that I am expected to furnish without delay such explanation or refutation of the above charges as I think fit, that my reply must be in your hands in the course of this afternoon, and that if my explanations are not satisfactory - the propriety of suspending me from office will become a question for the
