Mr. Heywood, (Mr. D'Almado e Castre) defended, and in atsiing his defence said his client was so aplum moker confirmed oplum smoker and he lived ́ ́ in Canton, but could, 'not' get opium there. Consequently he became very sick and he came to Hong kong and bought twenty taels of opium and he was on his way to Taipo to smoke it when he was arrested. He was then very sick. This was only a technical offence-it was not an opium farmer's prosecution; it was simply that he did not get permission from Mr. Hutolison. I should be glad if les missed the steamer and the French of" your Yeaders Post Office has been requested to send them to Brindial for transmission via tkr (I appeal" especially to 10 mibay and Negapaian. American ones) could throw any light on the derivation of this word. The verb "to stant" of course means to "arrest develop ment" or "keep email." I first remember hearing the word stant" applied as a noun in connection with what they call road work" in boxing training. Can it be that it originally refer- red to the efforts of boxers to wrestle with the flesh and keep within the limits of their boxing classes i.e. light weight, feather- weight etc. Fair play" con- peots the word with the music- hall. There agata it might have some connection, with its original meaning.. For instance, if we stunt a full fledged "drama, one can imagine the result being "sketch" and so on. The word now appears to be applied to any specific act and has become very general in its application. His Worship-How long was he down here for?
Mr. Heywood said that he was down here for just sufficient time to smoke a certsio quantity of opium and then he would go back. His Worship know that if confirmed opiam smokers could not get opium they became very siok even is gaol they were allowed opium water. It could be seen that the man was sick now, and five taels were not suf- ficient; he had to have twenty. If the "offence were committed after March 1, there would really be no offence at all, and therefore he would ask his Worship to soquit the man.
His Worship-The Ordinance is to prevent dealing in opium.
Mr. Heywood:-There is DO question of dealing here, at all. It is not even alleged, and the facts are not even in dispute. If you like I will put him in the wit neas-box, bat I don't think it necessary.
His Worship-Seven hundred and fifty dollars.
Sergeant Lanigan-May sak for half the fine to go to the infor- mer in caso the sum is paid?
Mr. Heywood:-Seven hundred and fifty; do you seriously sug- gest that, you Worship?
His Worship That is the
fine, Mr. Heywood.
Mr. Haywood-Seventy-five?
