APPALLING CHRISTMAS
TRAGEDY.
Detalls of the Terrible Affair at Calumet.
Since the tragic stampede öf litt'e obildren in the doomed Star Hall, Sunderland, many years ago, when, the only exit was choked with corpses, nothing quite so harrowing has cccurred as the disaster which was reported from Calumet, Michigen, "on Christmas Day, and which was briefly outlined by Reuter to the Telegraph at the time.

The most terrible feature of the calamity was that there had been no danger, there was no fire, and the fatal panic was started by = dranken stranger.
The party was of a obaritable character, designed. to bring seasonable pleasure to the little ones of minera who had been long out on strike.
The little town of Calamet ie celebrated for its rich copper mines, and it appears that for several months the copper miners living there had been out on strike and their families had suffered greatly from want of 1] food and other necessities of life. But in order to give the children a treat, several charitable organi- .eations had contributed and collected funds for a Christmas festival, which was held in the Italian Hall. A huge Christmas tree was set up and food and toya provided on a generous scale. with their .. The children,
mothers and fathers and helpers, had been enjoying the festival for some time. Just as the pre- santa from the tree were being handed to the little ones & Mau entered the hall and shouted out "Fire!"
The ory was imme- diately taken up and a mad rush made for the chief entrance.. -
Mad Fight for Safety. Mothers holding their children in their arme fought fiercely, to get through the narrow entrance, heedless of the poor mites who had fallen and were lying on the ground. In a minute or two the outlet was choked with bodies, while those behind still pressed forward in a mad fight for safety.
Other exits by stairosess were also blocked up, and the horrible scene continued for many minutes, while men and women climbed over the bodies of the weaker, some with children over their shoulders, and others mindful only of their own safely. A number of policemen and passers- by quickly assembled at the entrances, but found it impossible to do anything but drag out the bodies and summon the fire brigade.
But the tragic part of it was that there was no fire, and the rescuers climbing up the ladders and rushing up the fire-escapes erected on the walls of the hall- which nobody inside had thought they were easily accessible speedily took in the situation, and eventually succeeded in calming the distracted orowd.
