Secretary, but again Mr Austin distinctly
denies having given any authority

34. Before closing these
matters connected with the Public Gardens
may refer to
a complaint made by
the
Government Gardeners of the delay
in
paying
their
wages. The Pay lists
show that often
five
months elapsed before they received
their
wages
due to them. It is
needless
to
point out the evil results of this system,

which should
never
have been
introduced, and which has now, we
are
pleased to be able to report, been remedied. The Surveyor General, however,
has been asked to
enquire
into the
cause
of
the delay
35. We have been instructed to
ask as to what steps the Surveyor
General took for protecting the Public property in Government House after it had been vacated
by
The Lieutenant
Governor in December 1870.
