A Land of Contrasts. Retently, according to reports" from the north "of China, there were great rejoicings at Peking on the occasion of the election of Yuan Shih-kai to the Presidency of China. Wo read that an official reception was held in the place in the evening and that all the great Land illustrious at the capital, both Chinese and foreign, were present at the banquet. It reminds one, indeed, of the feast given by Belshazzar the king "to a thousand of his lords" who "drank wine before the thousand." Itie likely that there wore not "golden and silver vessels" to the extent" used by the king of old at, the famous feast, but from all accounts the rejoicings were as great and the self-complacency was overflowing. It would seem that for the hour st any rate, the troubles this unhappy country ware forgotten, and that all moved and acted as if every- thing in China was progressing as plearsntly as the, soft chimes of a wedding peal. Perhaps after all, if there was to be a reception at sil, it was as well that it was a triking one; if pleasure were the order of the hour, those par-. joipating might as well, for the Boze be free from care and full of joy.
