BOXING
(Continued from page 4.) out of the ordinary, the fight end- ed in a draw, though it was the firm belief of many ring-siders, including ourselves, that whatever laurels there were in the dght Miles was entitled to them.
Maker y, Gifford,
1728
Maher 1241ba. fought Giford 183lbs for the amateur Light weight · Championship, of the Orlant. It was intended that the boys should have fought for the Feather-weight Championship for which Maher had trained himself down. Gifford not being able to come down to anything like the proper weight, Maher pluckily decided to concede him nine pounds and fight him in the heavier
class. For three rounds Gifford appeared as though he didn't know what to do, and Maher commenced to tantalise him. Gifford became a little infuriated when he heard. the crowd laugh, and rashed at Maher and pelted away at bim blindly, failing to observe that Maber
finely covered Maher, however, found time during the wind-milling to pay out a left upper-cut, that went neatly through, forced Gif- ford back and left him an admir- able target for a right swing that seriously damaged his eye. Gif ford commenced in the subsequent rounds to use his weight, and naturally Maher devoted his atten tion to defending rather than attacking. Gifford very seldom found an opening, his leads were short, his swinge wild, his foot work slow and cumbersome. He fought pluckily, however, until the eighth round when Maher got busy and literally made ringe round him. It was a pity Maher did not
to force matters around earlier, as then there could not have been any doubt in the mind of the referee, as to who was the winner, He did not, however, and when time was called at the end of the tenth round, the verdict was a draw; though again we beg to be ex- oused for tendering the opinion that Maher was the winner." The lada will meet again shortly for the same honour when Maher will be much nearer hisopponent's weight.
