The King's Docki Considering the tendencies of liner architecture, states Shipping Record, the new graving dook at Singapore has very little water on the sill at high water of spring tides. The depth is said to be only 34 1. The enlarged Trafal." gar Dock at Southampton has 35 It., and the bigger dook at Belfast three inches more. The Glad- atone at Liverpool is generously deep, as it has need to be con- sidering the large ships which use the port. At Singapore there is no call, as matters stand, to provide greater depth, but ex cavated dooks "represent large fixtures of capital which are only remunerative over fairly long periods, and there is really, no saying how deep Far-Eastern ships may be before this King's Dock has paid for itself. Of course, a dry dock can be enlarg ed in order adequately to deal with growing requirements. The case of the Trafalgar at the mer- cantile port of Hampshire is in point. "Krian" Strikes A Rock. The Straits Steamship Co,'s "Krian" arrived in Singapore on October 9, from Kelantan with a badly damaged bow. This was caused by striking a rock on a small island about one mile south of Little Redang. The mishap occurred about two o'colock in the morning, in the very thick weather, Whilet a heavy rain- storm was in progress, Owing to the fact that she was only go.. ing slow, the ship's impact with the rook was not violent, and almost instantly she was got off into clear water again, the shook having scarcely been felt by the passengers. Without further in cident the trip to Singapore was completed, and subsequently the "Krain" proceeded into dock for for survey and repairs. The dam- age was to the bow plates, and was not such as to endanger the Yessel, nor to cause any leakage.
