Panama Canal Locks, One of the great objections to the scheme for a high-level canal" at Panamu was raised, says En- gineering in connection with the risk to which the whole under- taking would be exposed by possible damage to the looku," The level adopted is 85ft. above mean sea lovel, and this height is maintained for a distance of 324 miles along the canal, included in of about 187 square miles area. which length is the Gatun Lake,
The failure of a look, due to the wrecking of the gates or other cause, would prove disastrous, more especially if it were a ques tion of one of the bigh level locks. In view of the unwieldiness of the large vessels which the canol has been built to accommodate, and which in time it will undoubtedly have to deal with if it prove at all successful, several precautions are being taken to minimize risk of accident. Three schemes have been invoked with this end to view. The first, consists of taking all control of the vessels out of the hands of those on board. It is considered the great majority of the so- aidents of steamers coming inth contact with fized structures are due to the failure to comply with, or, at least, to a misunderstanding in the engine-room of, the ordera from the bridge. The risk will be lessened, it is thought, by tow. ing vessels through the looks instead of allowing them to do their own warping or manœuvr- ing. For this reason they will be required to draw up to the approach-walls, where they will be taken charge of by towing locomotives running on raok railways on the lock copings. The second protective device con siete of the adoption of chain- fender geer. These chains are slung across the look 100 ft. ahead of the most vulnerable gates. There are twenty-four" of them,
