Aside from the quarters for the officers and crew, the Gilbert has one magnificant cabin with prive
which is fit for a king. It will probably be a week or so before the Gilbert, leaves for Jolo waters in command of Captain "Goddes and it is safe to say that when she arrives there she will do some effective work in putting a stop to the smuggling from the
Borneo coast.
A Bad Time for Calcutta
Shipplog.
The end of July was a and time for all engaged in Calcutta Ship- ping, says "Capital." Rain. fell steadily day after day and how to hip goods without their incur. ing damage from the wet was p was an exasperating problem. At the jute mille goods sold for delivery in July waited in the dry sheds, but managere dared not send them through the rain. I was not until the fateful 31st had passed that the rain ceased and a couple of days of fine weather easued. With fine weather there was at once a big demand for boats and rates soared up prompt- ly. There is always trouble with shipping goods at this time of the year and heavy losses are often incurred by late shipment, de- aurrage and damage by rain. The wonder is that high roofs of
me kind have not been fashion. able that could shelter the vessel loading and the space between her and the shed and even the boats alongside. Apart from the serious menace to trade by the ab. normalsupply of rain the handicap to shipping has been great. Two cyalones within a week is a pretty strong record, and the result was that ateamers were held up in the stream when they should hava proceeded to see, while many were delayed at Diamond Barbour and intermediate stations when coming into port. Roman Remains.
Good progress has been made with the excavations on the site of the Roman city at Kenchester, near Hereford. The work is be ing undertaken by the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club. Fresh objects of interest are being unearthed every day, and the portion of the site now being ex- oavated promises to be excep. tionally interesting, The excava tions have recently laid bare some very finely construo el walls of buildings, probably of the third century. Excavations were begun on August 11th on the northeast rampart of the Ambleside Roman camp at the bead of Windermere,
