WELLS DEFEATS

MAHONEY,

Following is the conclusion of the description, in "Boxing" of the Wells Mahoney fight:-

Wells, as usual went off well at the start of this the eleventh round, but the Iron-bark man took everything with a rather grim smile and, dacking coolly unter a righthook, Hushed the Bobardier a face with a couple of back-handers. Billy then proceeded to hit the Irishman all over the ring and for the first time in the battle it became clear that Mahoney bad-delved, deeply into his reserves of strength.

Yet he contrived to get home a couple of those overhand swings to the face during the twelfth round. Save for a more or less pushed left or two and about a couple of light body digs (or attempts at such) at close quar- ters, these were the only blow he did land during the session. Wells hit him from every angle and everywhere, and crossed him to the jaw, hooked him to the mouth and chin, jabbed him to the nose and lips, upper-out him, did everything, in fact, save knock him off his feet. He had a great chance, too, by the way, when Pookey loosed a desperate right swing and missed badly. The Irishman floundered right across the ring, and Billy might perhaps have finished matters there and then. But he was never over-famous for following up these chances, and this time, if ever, he had every reason for apering a wonderfully gallant foe.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 1943.

Throwing up his hands, he angged and swayed, slithered sideways, and went down in a and Packey was truly out. heap. The "out" was called,

Mahoney's Tactical Error. of an error both in strategy and Mahoney may have been guilty notics when he elected to make slow advances at his oppon- ent. It is just possible that had he rushed in right from the start and continued to rush in an effort to hustle Wells out of his atride, that the big fellow might havo oracked. But this is by as means certain. Packey has never yot shown any surprising speed on his feet, and there is the other possibility that if he had rubbed. from the start Wells would have gone faster himself than he did. Nevertheless, and in spite of the success which attended those end- den over-hand wallops, we cannot belp thinking that Packay played his cards as Wolls would have wished him to do had he had the ordering" of the opposition camp. It was a painfully one-sided contest, but it was always interest ing. Not only on account of the magnitude of the issue, but be. cause the challenger put up such a game and gallant struggle, and because, owing to his marvellous pluok, he retained a chance of landing a winning blow almost till the finish.

Packey's Last Struggle. We settled down for the 13t round with the question.

"Was this going to be sensational?" It wasn't particularly, though it witnessed the end of the struggle Mahoney came up looking badly battered and obviously weakened, but we had grown so convinced that be was as iron-bound as a Dreadnought that we should not have been surprised to see himatay the distance. What is more, he came up full of fight and of des- perate designs on the holder's rail Bection. Welle, however, was as fit and fresh as when he ét trted, Fitter and fresher, in fact, and be was now stopping or avoiding Mahoney's charges with the utmost ease. Packey was going tor, and has already intimated Straits and India via Calcutta- weak, and when a shower of jabs that £200 will go down 88.8000 went to his face, followed by left as he arrives.
