A monument erected to the The Hongkong Tramway.
memory of Adam, the fret man,'
is the only one of its kind in America, and probably in the world.
It was erected in 1900 by fr John P. Brady,' 's' well known contractor and builder, of Bali- more, at his country place, Hickory Ground,' near Garden- `ville, in the north-eastern suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland. It is composed of stone, bronze, and cement, and is aurmonated by a very large and accurate sundial, aapoolally calculated and con- structed for the latirade in which the monument is erected, N. Lat, 39 degrees 20 seconde. Surround- ing the hour figures, in a cirole on the dial, is the motto Sie transit gloria mundi' (S) passos. the glory of the world), and the dale 1909, and on either side of the shaft is a sunken panel with sunken letters, the two reading:
"This, the First Shaft in America, is Erected to "the Memory of Adam, the First Mn."
Mr. Brady," says the Strand Magazine, thought that "where so many others of laser worth have been boäonred, it was about time that somthing was done for Adam."
