being folded back behind the pipe. The strip of piping left intact, at the ripped part, which incladed the lapped seam, was only about five inches in width. The aperture formed was about 21 inches in length. As a result of the disaster, Thomas Firth, a plumber's apprentice, was so severely injured that be died in hospital on December 13. John a plumber's Henry Boutley, labourer, was also scalded about the hands and face, but recovered. It was stated that a third man was slightly injured. The ob servations of the Engineer Sur- veror-in-Chief to the Board of Trado are as follows:-This re- port deals with an explosion from an exhaust steam-pipe, resulting in the death of one man and in- 15ary to two others. At the part

which failed, a serious flaw. existed, bat, notwitbatanding this defect, failure would probably not have occurred at the time it did if the pipe had not been subjected to an abnorm- When the ally high-pressure. explosion took place, the change valves controlling the passage of the steam to the condensers were being operated, and there are grounds for supposing that the flow of the steam was thereby chooked, thus causing the pressure in the part of the range containing the burst pipe to be excessive. The defect in the pipe, however, was of such a nature as to seriously weaken it and render it dangerous. Mo- difications have now been made in the arrangement, and relief valves fitted which will, in the future, prevent an undue pressure oxisting in the pipes; this should. make the arrangement quite safe
