The Servant Problem;
It may be true that "Ceylon servants ora smart at zerving at table, but woe fully wasteful, crim- irally slow and sinfully unclean as soon as the lady's back is turned on them." What a familiar pictura is presented to the mind's eye! It recalls memories of the paat. Ceylon gervants have at | least one niecibata which is readily acknowledge, and that is that thay are smati at table. We are denied that pleasure in Hongkong
either at home or in the hotels. The motto of the Chinesa boy is exentially one which reds that "time was made for slaves." Ho was not taught to hustle, when in the employ of the foreigner. In India the practice of "crimping is provalent; the servant finds that another, house-holder is pre- pared to pay him a higher rate of The wrge, and he departa. samo patient-wracking scheme of education has to be set into operation, the servant has to be taught some lossons of his duty to himself, and the household. The want here of some similar me.eura of legislation as obtains in Ceylon has driven many coup- lea from comfortable little homes into one or two rooms at the hotels. The servant problem has defied us for many years, and evidently baffles at present the efforts of house-holders in the city of Calcutta.

Whether there is an instance of a Chinese being punished for a bigamous marriage with a woman of his own race we do not know; the sproial feature of the case under notice is that the bigamous marriage was with an American lady, and the sentence in the osse was imposed, perhaps, not alto- gather without the intention of It proving a salutary warning to the young married Ühinese, who dwell abroad for the purpose of study.

What Is the Republic Doing? Does Republicanism mean that a few of the larger cities are to be kept in fair order, by hosts of uniformed men and officials whilst the masses of the people in the country, foreignere, and trade. are left to take care of them- calves, which means that they are at the mercy of the unnum bered banditii, who, like beasts of pray, are ever on the look out for an opportunity to gorge themselves, at the expense of others? Instead of allowing the thirty or forty thousand, uni formed troops to idle within and around Canton, lounging in barracks, or doing a bit of drill, an effective · Government would see to it that these were apportioned under the instruc tions of the different district magistrates, who would then eat them to work to arrest these rob- bers, and so make it possible for the country people to live in peace.
