The Browning Love Letters. The Home papers have of late had much to say in condemnation of the auction of the love letters of Mr. and Mrs. Browning, which, as we have already recorded were, after a futile attempt to obtsim. them for the British Museum, "knocked down" at the fanciful' sum of £2,550 to Mr. Sabin, the well-known art dealer and col leotor. It seems a somewhat sordid transaction, and if anyone is to blame it is the relatives of Mr and Mrs Browning who sppear to be mach less santi- mental than the distinguished poet and poetess. No incon siderable losses have occasionally been incurred by the writ- ing of love-letters; but there is no instance on record of a packet of such compositions be coming so valuable, in hard oagh, as the famous correspondence referred to. As these 570 old letters, some written by Robert Browning to Miss. Barrett, the remainder received by him from her before their marriage, have all been given to the world in print, objections to the public auction of enoh intimate doon. ments on the score of sentiment doubtless lose some of their weight. Yet it is impossible to regard the transaction without regret; and most people will especially deplore the failure of attempt to arrange for the pre-. servation of this extemely interest- ing literary treasure in the British Museum.

There is no doubt that since Maroh 1912, Ohina has been "squeezed like a lemon" of her best art treasures, and that objecta of a class hitherto unheard of and unseen outside of China have come under the hammer in the auction rooms of Europe and Americs. Many of these have been sent out by native purveyors who, tempted by high prices, have not always been ton. sarapulous as to their acquirement. The China- Monuments Society: exists Ato see the traffic in artistic, archeol gianl and other cultural cbjecta; of ancient China legitimized by statate and controlled by the Government so as to make it anber servient to the welfare of the people of China and ereditable to a civilized world.
