China and the Standard Oil Company.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, MAY 30, 1913.

Entertainments

VICTORIA THEATRE.

Commencing Wed. 28th May.

THE DALLAS

The "Tins" has received from Mr H. C. Folgn, the president of the Standard Oil Company, 20, Broadway, New York, the follow ing communication:In your issue of April 4 you published an extract from a letter omonating from Peking and which you

"Indicates the May

tempts tions

to which the Chinese. Government has been exponod.' This said extract states speci- fically that "The Standard Oi! Company have made an offer to the Chinese Government for the sole rights of exploitation of petroleum in China for a term of years, in consideration of the Standard Oil Company's making to the Chinese Government an immediate loan of thirty five million dollars gold." This story with many embellishments, al- though it was at once emphati cally denied, his been widely circalated and bas become a Played source of annoyance and embar rassment to the company. There is not a scintilla of truth in the extract referred to, the origin of which we are unable to trace. Will you not do us the favour and the justice of publishing our explicit denial?
